The Voice That Lingers: Jason Tibor on Craft, Creepiness, and Connection
There is a particular kind of voice that stays with you after the recording ends -- one that settles into the spaces between words, rich and textured, carrying weight you didn't expect. Jason Tibor has that voice. Based in southern Oregon's Pacific Northwest, Tibor has built a career on the understanding that voice acting is never "just reading words." As he'll tell you, it's about finding the person behind the script and letting emotion do the heavy lifting.
From Many Hats to One Microphone
Tibor has been performing and creating for as long as he can remember. But the path to the microphone was anything but direct. Before committing to voiceover full-time, he cycled through an impressive roster of professional lives -- radio DJ, college instructor, car rental branch manager, route service and delivery driver, corporate office worker, and more.
"Several years ago, I realized I wanted to do more than have a job to make money," Tibor says, "and I made the decision to be a voice actor and audiobook narrator -- the opportunity existed, and I knew all I had to do was take it."
That decision was less a leap of faith than a calculated step built on years of accumulated experience. The creative roles -- radio broadcasting and teaching -- honed his ability to connect with people through spoken word, to read a room (or a listener) and adjust in real time. The less glamorous gigs taught him something equally vital: how to run a business.
Where Business Meets Art
That combination serves Tibor well in an industry where talent alone is rarely enough. The practical knowledge he gained from years in sales, marketing, and corporate environments gave him fluency in the language of business -- the kind of understanding that helps a voice actor not just survive but build something lasting. He knows how to communicate with clients, meet deadlines, and treat every project with the professionalism it deserves, whether he is narrating an audiobook or voicing something far more unconventional.
And unconventional is in his wheelhouse. When asked about the strangest thing he has ever voiced, Tibor offers a knowing pause before answering: a series of meditations for men experiencing performance issues in, as he delicately puts it, "intimate" areas of their life. The kind of project that requires both a steady voice and a straight face -- and speaks to the range of work that voice actors encounter.
The Craft Behind the Performance
Tibor describes his voice in three words: rich, textured, smooth. His specialties include audiobooks, audio drama, and -- perhaps most distinctively -- anything requiring a creepy voice. The niche demands more than surface-level spookiness; it requires the kind of layered, controlled performance that comes from a deliberate process.
That process, as Tibor explains it, is rooted in character and emotion. "First, decide who the character speaking is and what they're about, then decide what that person feels," he says. "Then let the performance flow from the emotion." A simple framework -- one that prioritizes inner life over vocal tricks. The result is work that feels inhabited rather than performed.
A Podcast Built From the Ground Up
The project that pushed Tibor the furthest was Static Shift -- an audio drama podcast that he wrote, directed, produced, and composed the music for. Created entirely in-house with his collaborators at Articul8 Studios, it began as a modest production with limited scope and steadily grew in size and complexity.
"It was an enormous amount of work," Tibor recalls, "but the experience of listening to the season finale with the friends who made it with me was priceless. It was an accomplishment that we earned together."
Static Shift represents the breadth of what Tibor brings to his craft: creative vision, technical skill, and the tenacity to see an ambitious project through to completion.
The Project That Changed Everything
While Static Shift tested his limits, Partial Veil holds a special place in Tibor's career. The spooky audio drama podcast, created by Allison Cossitt, was his first major job -- and it opened his eyes to what becomes possible when the right people come together around a shared vision.
"Being part of Partial Veil showed me what's possible when you bring the right people together," Tibor says. For a voice actor who specializes in the eerie and unsettling, it was the perfect proving ground -- and the kind of early-career milestone that confirmed he was where he belonged.
Beyond the Mic
When he is not behind the microphone, Tibor keeps busy with the kind of life that suits southern Oregon well: ranch work, playing guitar, and consuming books -- though he is quick to admit that "reading" these days mostly means listening to audiobooks. A fitting detail for someone who has dedicated his career to the spoken word; even in his downtime, he is immersed in the art form he loves.
Why the Human Voice Still Matters
In an era of AI-generated voices, Tibor is clear-eyed about what makes human voice actors irreplaceable. "All the intangibles, rough edges and imperfections of a human voice can be approximated but never replicated," he says. "Those are the things that make each voice unique."
The breath, the hesitation, the warmth that bleeds through on an unexpected syllable -- these are not flaws to be smoothed out. They are the point.
He is also candid about what the industry often overlooks: voice work, regardless of type, can be taxing, both physically and emotionally. The polished final product listeners enjoy is the result of effort, skill, and human investment.
