Meet Dean Wendt: From Radio Disney to the Voice of Barney

Dean Wendt's journey from Radio Disney DJ to voicing one of the most beloved children's characters in television history proves that the best voice acting careers are built on pure instinct.

Meet Dean Wendt: From Radio Disney to the Voice of Barney

The Voice Behind the Purple Dinosaur

Most people hear a familiar voice on television and never think twice about who is behind it. But for Dean Wendt, based in Los Angeles, becoming the voice of one of the most recognizable characters in children's entertainment was the defining moment of an already remarkable career.

Dean's path into voice acting started at Radio Disney in the 1990s, where he was already a seasoned DJ. "I was a DJ my whole life," he says, tracing his roots back to doing the morning show in college at WPGU. From Radio Disney, he moved into voicing Barney the dinosaur, and from there expanded into commercial, narrative, and character work across the industry.

A Career Built on Instinct

What sets Dean apart is his approach to the craft. When a new script arrives, he does something that might surprise clients: he records it cold.

"I record it cold just in case I hit something naturally that I would have overthought if I studied it," he explains. "Then I do a take that is studied." This instinct-first method has served him well across a career that spans commercial reads, character voices, storytelling, and announcer work. He describes himself as a "jack of all trades" with a voice that is warm, conversational, and friendly.

Navigating Barney and Beyond

When asked about his most challenging project, Dean doesn't hesitate. Taking over as the voice of Barney was both the hardest and most rewarding work he has done. "It was a tough one to navigate when I took over," he admits. "Rewarding? Absolutely. The response of children and their parents is life changing."

The role also produced some of the strangest recording sessions of his career. "I had to gargle as Barney," he recalls with a laugh. "It was for a brush your teeth Barney doll. Still the weirdest thing!" He also once did a live Regis Philbin impression on live television while in character as Barney.

Beyond Barney, Dean is especially proud of his work on the Mitsubishi Outlander campaign. "Love working with them and I get to use my cool luxury voice, which is always fun!"

What People Get Wrong

Dean is quick to correct a common misconception about voice acting. "That it isn't acting!" he says. "When they say it sounds like a normal person, it takes a lot to get to normal. A lot easier said than done!" Getting a read to sound natural and effortless is, paradoxically, one of the hardest things a voice actor does.

Life Outside the Booth

When he's not recording, Dean stays close to his craft. He enjoys finding new equipment for his booth, along with reading and watching movies. His deep enthusiasm for the technical side of voice acting keeps him constantly exploring better ways to deliver for clients.

On the Human Voice

Ask Dean what makes a human voice irreplaceable, and his answer is immediate and powerful: "Soul."

No algorithm, no matter how advanced, can replicate the lived experience and emotional truth that a human performer brings to every line. It is that soul, that accumulation of real moments and real feelings, that audiences connect with whether they realize it or not.

Advice for Clients

For anyone hiring a voice actor for the first time, Dean's advice is refreshingly simple. "Go with your gut and make sure they are relatable," he says. "Talk to them. If it feels like you know them already, you have found the right actor."

That personal connection is what transforms a good voice over project into a great one. And for Dean, the equation is equally straightforward on the other side: "Follow your dreams, and the money will always follow."
