Meet Stephen Carlock: From Financial Consultant to Stargate Voice Actor
When Stephen Carlock lost his job three weeks after his third child was born, he made a leap of faith into voice acting. Today, the Austin-area talent voices everything from AAA video games to humanitarian campaigns, bringing a warm, husky trustworthiness to every performance.

Three weeks. That is how long Stephen Carlock had been a father of three when he lost his job. For most people, that kind of timing would be paralyzing. For Stephen, it became a launchpad. After prayer, deep conversation, and a hard look at what came next, voice acting emerged as a path forward. It was not the obvious choice for a man who had never aspired to own a business, but Stephen decided to swing for the fences. More than eight years later, with a fourth child now in the mix and a thriving career behind the microphone, it is safe to say the gamble paid off.
A Foundation Built on Listening
Before he ever stepped into a recording booth, Stephen spent nearly five years as a retirement plan consultant, guiding 401(k) participants and providing direct client support in the world of retirement finance. It was detail-oriented, people-facing work that required patience and precision. "It taught me the value of never assuming and always asking the right questions," Stephen says. That discipline followed him straight into voice acting, where understanding a client needs is every bit as important as nailing the read.
Operating from just outside Austin, Texas, Stephen has built a reputation for commercial work, brand videos, corporate narration, and educational content. But his range extends well beyond the corporate world. He has voiced video game characters for PS5, Google Oculus VR, and Steam titles, including a role that sits close to his heart as a lifelong science fiction fan.
The Craft Behind the Warmth
Ask Stephen to describe his voice in three words and he will tell you: warm, husky, trustworthy. But the warmth listeners hear is not accidental. It comes from a deliberate process that begins long before he reads a single line of script.
"Before even considering the script, I take time to learn about the brand," Stephen explains. "The script is a moment in time for a bigger situation -- a brand image. I learn who the business is, what they do, who their audience is, what problem they are solving." Only then does he turn to the copy itself, mapping out inflection points, strategic breaths, and pronunciations. It is an approach that treats every project as a partnership, not just a performance.
Stargate, Humanitarian Work, and a Zombie Bathroom
Among his proudest credits is voicing a main playable character in Stargate: Timekeepers. For a self-described lifelong sci-fi fan, stepping into that universe was a genuine thrill. But Stephen is equally proud of work that carries weight beyond entertainment. He has lent his voice to organizations combating human trafficking, child trafficking, and global hunger -- projects where the stakes go far beyond brand awareness.
And then there is the other end of the spectrum. When asked about the weirdest thing he has ever voiced, Stephen does not hesitate: an NPC in a zombie game who the player encounters by knocking on a bathroom stall door. "I had to strain as though having a difficult time while speaking," he recalls with a laugh. The range from humanitarian advocacy to zombie bathroom humor is, in its own way, a testament to the breadth of his craft.
The Business of Being a Voice
If there is one thing Stephen wishes more people understood about the industry, it is that talent alone does not build a career. "Many people think every voice actor landed an agent based on having a nice voice," he says. "In truth, most are very diligent, hard-working people who have climbed a steep mountain facing frequent headwinds."
He sees the same misconception from the other direction, too. "People get wrong that it is all about being a great performer. Just as important is having good business sense and knowing how to support clients needs." That consulting background, it turns out, was not just a former career -- it was training for this one.
Beyond the Microphone
Away from the booth, Stephen is a family man through and through. He and his wife are raising four kids, and their idea of a good time involves the outdoors: hiking, fishing, and camping. Video games are a family affair, too, which makes his work in the gaming industry feel like a natural extension of life at home.
Why Human Voices Still Matter
Stephen has thought carefully about the rise of AI-generated voices, and his perspective cuts to the heart of the issue. "Behind a human voice is a real lived experience, giving context to a performance," he says. "AI voices are like amateur actors -- they know how to sound sad but lack the ability to feel the moment."
He offers an analogy that sticks: "AI voices are a bit like a beautiful paint-by-number picture. A human voice is an artist inspired by beauty to create the image in the first place."
His Advice for Clients
For anyone in the process of hiring a voice actor, Stephen guidance is refreshingly simple. "We are just people. Be personal. The more we know each other, the easier it is to work together. Do not be afraid to ask for guidance -- a good voice actor can help articulate what you are looking for."
It is advice that reflects the way he works: collaborative, curious, and grounded in the belief that the best results come from real human connection.
