Meet Clark Casey: From PhD to Nintendo Voice Actor

Clark Casey never expected to become a professional voice actor. After finishing his PhD and serving in the Army, he discovered a talent that turned a casual hobby into a career working with brands like Nintendo.

Meet Clark Casey: From PhD to Nintendo Voice Actor

An Unexpected Path

Some of the best voice actors never planned on becoming one. Clark Casey, based in Nashville, Tennessee, is a perfect example. After finishing his PhD, he thought voice acting would be "a fun new thing to learn about and develop a new skill with no expectation of ever doing it professionally."

That casual curiosity turned into a full career.

Built by Experience

Before stepping behind the microphone, Clark's life had already given him an unusually broad foundation. He served in the Army, worked as a student and university teacher, and accumulated years of public speaking experience across all of those roles. "Definitely all gave me a lot of background in public speaking and a diverse range of life experiences to draw from," he reflects.

That diversity shows in his work. Clark specializes in commercial and narration voice over, bringing a voice he describes as warm, upbeat, and relaxed. His approach is efficient and instinct-driven: he reads the direction if provided, does a quick once-over of the script for context and tone, and then goes with his first instinct for the read.

The First Gig

Clark's most challenging project was also his first professional booking, a fitting introduction to the realities of the industry. The job involved a large number of videos with an animated narrator in a very upbeat, quirky style. "It was rewarding because, especially for a first professionally booked gig and despite the stress and trying to not let them catch on that I was brand new, it was a fun gig and the money earned really let me get a solid foot in the door."

That ability to perform under pressure while maintaining creative energy has defined his career ever since.

Working with Nintendo

When asked about projects he is especially proud of, Clark doesn't hesitate: "Every single job I've done for Nintendo. That's a huge one for me." Landing work with one of the most iconic entertainment brands in the world is a milestone that speaks to both his talent and the unique quality he brings to every session.

The Work Behind the Voice

One thing Clark wants people to understand about voice acting is that there is far more to it than what happens in front of the microphone. "The amount of NON-voice work that goes into it" is something that surprises most people outside the industry. From marketing and auditioning to self-direction and studio maintenance, the business side of voice acting is as demanding as the creative side.

And yes, the creative side can get strange. The weirdest thing Clark has ever been asked to voice? "Non-verbal goblin noises."

Beyond the Mic

Outside of recording, Clark is an avid outdoorsman. He spends his free time hiking, camping, paddleboarding, and rock climbing, balanced with what he describes as an "unhealthy amount of video games." That combination of physical adventure and digital play keeps him grounded and creative.

Why Human Voices Matter

For Clark, what makes the human voice irreplaceable comes down to authenticity. "The imperfections and emotional nuance a human voice is able to provide" are things that synthetic alternatives simply cannot replicate. It is those small, unplanned variations in delivery that make a performance feel real and relatable.

His Advice

Clark's guidance for anyone hiring a voice actor is straightforward: "Largely, just communicate well and clearly explain your vision. Let the actor deliver on that." Trust the professional, provide clear direction, and the results will speak for themselves.

As for the industry itself, Clark notes something that sets voice actors apart: "Almost to a fault, I think, everyone in the industry absolutely loves what they do."
